GeForce GTS 450 vs Radeon HD 5850

Intro

The GeForce GTS 450 uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 783 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a frequency of 902 MHz on this model. It features 192 SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 5850, which features a GPU core clock speed of 725 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1440(288x5) SPUs, 72 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Radeon HD 5850 151 Watts
Difference: 45 Watts (42%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 5850 should be much faster than the GeForce GTS 450 overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 128000 MB/sec
GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
Difference: 70272 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 5850 should be a lot (more or less 108%) better at AF than the GeForce GTS 450. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 52200 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 27144 (108%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 5850 should be much (approximately 85%) better at FSAA than the GeForce GTS 450, and should be capable of handling higher resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 5850 23200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 10672 (85%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
