GeForce GT 440 3GB vs GeForce GTS 450

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 3GB comes with a core clock frequency of 594 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 144 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce GTS 450, which uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 783 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM works at a speed of 902 MHz on this card. It features 192 SPUs as well as 32 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 56 Watts
GeForce GTS 450 106 Watts
Difference: 50 Watts (89%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the GeForce GTS 450 should theoretically be much superior to the GeForce GT 440 3GB overall. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 57728 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 14528 (34%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTS 450 is quite a bit (approximately 76%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce GT 440 3GB. (explain)

GeForce GTS 450 25056 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 10800 (76%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GT 440 3GB is superior to the GeForce GTS 450, but not by far. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 3GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTS 450 12528 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1728 (14%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
