GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 vs GeForce GT 440 1.5GB

Intro

The GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 has a core clock frequency of 550 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 500 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 65 nm design. It features 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB, which features core clock speeds of 594 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1536 MB of GDDR3 RAM. It features 144 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 24 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 50 Watts
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 56 Watts
Difference: 6 Watts (12%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB should be 170% faster than the GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 43200 MB/sec
GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 27200 (170%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GT 440 1.5GB will be a lot (approximately 62%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 9500 GT DDR2. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 8800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 5456 (62%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GT 440 1.5GB should be much (more or less 224%) more effective at full screen anti-aliasing than the GeForce 9500 GT DDR2, and also able to handle higher resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 9500 GT DDR2 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9856 (224%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
