Radeon HD 3470 512MB vs Radeon HD 6950

Intro

The Radeon HD 3470 512MB comes with a clock frequency of 800 MHz and a GDDR3 memory speed of 950 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 55 nm design. It is made up of 40(8x5) SPUs, 4 Texture Address Units, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon HD 6950, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1250 MHz on this model. It features 1408 SPUs as well as 88 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 6950 should theoretically be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 160000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 30400 MB/sec
Difference: 129600 (426%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 will be a lot (approximately 2100%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 70400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 67200 (2100%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 6950 should be much (more or less 700%) more effective at AA than the Radeon HD 3470 512MB, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 6950 25600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 3470 512MB 3200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 22400 (700%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
