GeForce 8500 GT vs Radeon HD 6750

Intro

The GeForce 8500 GT features a GPU core clock speed of 450 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR2 RAM is set to run at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 16 SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 6750, which makes use of a 40 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 725 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this card. It features 720 SPUs as well as 36 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 8500 GT 45 Watts
Radeon HD 6750 86 Watts
Difference: 41 Watts (91%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon HD 6750 should be a lot faster than the GeForce 8500 GT overall. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 8500 GT 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 51200 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 6750 is a lot (approximately 625%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce 8500 GT. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 26100 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8500 GT 3600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 22500 (625%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon HD 6750 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 6750 11600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8500 GT 1800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 9800 (544%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
