Radeon R9 Fury X vs Radeon RX 7900 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 Fury X has clock speeds of 1050 MHz on the GPU, and 500 MHz on the 4096 MB of HBM memory. It features 4096 SPUs along with 256 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which makes use of a 5 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1500 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a frequency of 2500 MHz on this card. It features 5376 SPUs along with 336 TAUs and 192 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon R9 Fury X 275 Watts
Radeon RX 7900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 25 Watts (9%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 7900 XT is 60% faster than the Radeon R9 Fury X in general, because of its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 819200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 Fury X 512000 MB/sec
Difference: 307200 (60%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT will be much (approximately 88%) better at AF than the Radeon R9 Fury X. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 504000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 Fury X 268800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 235200 (88%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 7900 XT is a lot (approximately 329%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the Radeon R9 Fury X, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 7900 XT 288000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 Fury X 67200 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 220800 (329%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
