GeForce GTX 460 2GB vs Radeon RX 6950 XT

Intro

The GeForce GTX 460 2GB uses a 40 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 675 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a frequency of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 336 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6950 XT, which has GPU clock speed of 1925 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 RAM running at 2250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 5120 SPUs, 320 Texture Address Units, and 128 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GTX 460 2GB 160 Watts
Radeon RX 6950 XT 335 Watts
Difference: 175 Watts (109%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 6950 XT will be 412% faster than the GeForce GTX 460 2GB in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 589824 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 460 2GB 115200 MB/sec
Difference: 474624 (412%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6950 XT is quite a bit (about 1530%) more effective at AF than the GeForce GTX 460 2GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 616000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 2GB 37800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 578200 (1530%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6950 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6950 XT 246400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 460 2GB 21600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 224800 (1041%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
