Radeon HD 7970 vs Radeon RX 6750 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7970 features a GPU clock speed of 925 MHz, and the 3072 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1375 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also features 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6750 XT, which has clock speeds of 2150 MHz on the GPU, and 2250 MHz on the 12288 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Both cards have the same power consumption.

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon RX 6750 XT should in theory be a lot superior to the Radeon HD 7970 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6750 XT 442368 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7970 264000 MB/sec
Difference: 178368 (68%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6750 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 191%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 7970. (explain)

Radeon RX 6750 XT 344000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7970 118400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 225600 (191%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6750 XT is superior to the Radeon HD 7970, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6750 XT 137600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7970 29600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 108000 (365%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
