Radeon HD 6870 vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 6870 uses a 40 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1050 MHz on this particular card. It features 1120 SPUs along with 56 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which comes with a clock frequency of 2200 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2250 MHz. It also features a 64-bit bus, and uses a 6 nm design. It is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Radeon HD 6870 151 Watts
Difference: 44 Watts (41%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 6500 XT should be just a bit faster than the Radeon HD 6870 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Radeon HD 6870 134400 MB/sec
Difference: 13056 (10%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 179%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon HD 6870. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 6870 50400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 90400 (179%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is superior to the Radeon HD 6870, by far. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 6870 28800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 41600 (144%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
