GeForce GT 340 1GB vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The GeForce GT 340 1GB features clock speeds of 550 MHz on the GPU, and 850 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 96 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which comes with a core clock frequency of 2200 MHz and a GDDR6 memory frequency of 2250 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 6 nm design. It features 1024 SPUs, 64 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce GT 340 1GB 69 Watts
Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Difference: 38 Watts (55%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6500 XT, in theory, should be much faster than the GeForce GT 340 1GB overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 54400 MB/sec
Difference: 93056 (171%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT will be quite a bit (approximately 700%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 340 1GB. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 17600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 123200 (700%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 340 1GB 4400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 66000 (1500%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
