Geforce GTX 760 vs Radeon RX 6500 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 760 makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 980 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1502 MHz on this card. It features 1152 SPUs along with 96 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon RX 6500 XT, which has clock speeds of 2200 MHz on the GPU, and 2250 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 107 Watts
Geforce GTX 760 170 Watts
Difference: 63 Watts (59%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Geforce GTX 760 should perform much faster than the Radeon RX 6500 XT overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 760 192256 MB/sec
Radeon RX 6500 XT 147456 MB/sec
Difference: 44800 (30%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6500 XT should be much (more or less 50%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Geforce GTX 760. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 140800 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 760 94080 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 46720 (50%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6500 XT is superior to the Geforce GTX 760, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6500 XT 70400 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 760 31360 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 39040 (124%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
