Radeon HD 7870 vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7870 has a GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1200 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1280 Stream Processors, 80 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which has GPU core speed of 1968 MHz, and 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory set to run at 2000 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Radeon HD 7870 175 Watts
Difference: 15 Watts (9%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 6600 XT should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7870 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7870 153600 MB/sec
Difference: 108544 (71%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT should be quite a bit (about 215%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 7870. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7870 80000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 171904 (215%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT will be quite a bit (about 294%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon HD 7870, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7870 32000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 93952 (294%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
