Geforce GTX 680 vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 680 has core speeds of 1006 MHz on the GPU, and 1502 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1968 MHz. The GDDR6 memory runs at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this particular card. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Geforce GTX 680 195 Watts
Difference: 35 Watts (22%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6600 XT, in theory, should be a lot faster than the Geforce GTX 680 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 680 192256 MB/sec
Difference: 69888 (36%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT should be a lot (more or less 96%) more effective at AF than the Geforce GTX 680. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 680 128768 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 123136 (96%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is superior to the Geforce GTX 680, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 680 32192 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 93760 (291%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
