Radeon R9 270 vs Radeon RX 6600 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 270 has a GPU clock speed of 900 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM runs at 1400 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also is made up of 1280 Stream Processors, 80 Texture Address Units, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6600 XT, which features clock speeds of 1968 MHz on the GPU, and 2000 MHz on the 8192 MB of GDDR6 memory. It features 2048 SPUs along with 128 Texture Address Units and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon R9 270 150 Watts
Radeon RX 6600 XT 160 Watts
Difference: 10 Watts (7%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6600 XT should be 46% faster than the Radeon R9 270 in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 262144 MB/sec
Radeon R9 270 179200 MB/sec
Difference: 82944 (46%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6600 XT should be a lot (about 250%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R9 270. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 251904 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 270 72000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 179904 (250%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6600 XT is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6600 XT 125952 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 270 28800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 97152 (337%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
