GeForce RTX 3080 Ti vs Radeon RX 550

Intro

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti has a clock frequency of 1365 MHz and a GDDR6X memory speed of 1188 MHz. It also uses a 384-bit bus, and makes use of a 8 nm design. It is made up of 10240 SPUs, 320 Texture Address Units, and 112 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 550, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1100 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 512 SPUs, 32 TAUs, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon RX 550 50 Watts
GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 350 Watts
Difference: 300 Watts (600%)

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon RX 550 overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 934297 MB/sec
Radeon RX 550 114688 MB/sec
Difference: 819609 (715%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 3080 Ti will be quite a bit (more or less 1141%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon RX 550. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 436800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 550 35200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 401600 (1141%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti is superior to the Radeon RX 550, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce RTX 3080 Ti 152880 Mpixels/sec
Radeon RX 550 17600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 135280 (769%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
