Radeon HD 7770 vs Radeon RX 6700 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7770 features core speeds of 1000 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 1024 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 Texture Address Units and 16 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon RX 6700 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 2321 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM is set to run at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this particular model. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Radeon HD 7770 80 Watts
Radeon RX 6700 XT 230 Watts
Difference: 150 Watts (188%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon RX 6700 XT should be a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7770 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7770 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 321216 (446%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT should be a lot (more or less 828%) better at AF than the Radeon HD 7770. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 40000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 331360 (828%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6700 XT is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7770 16000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 132544 (828%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
