Radeon HD 7850 vs Radeon RX 6700 XT

Intro

The Radeon HD 7850 comes with core speeds of 860 MHz on the GPU, and 1200 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon RX 6700 XT, which makes use of a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 2321 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM works at a frequency of 2000 MHz on this specific model. It features 2560 SPUs as well as 160 TAUs and 64 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 7850 130 Watts
Radeon RX 6700 XT 230 Watts
Difference: 100 Watts (77%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6700 XT should perform a lot faster than the Radeon HD 7850 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Radeon HD 7850 153600 MB/sec
Difference: 239616 (156%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT will be much (approximately 575%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 7850. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 55040 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 316320 (575%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6700 XT is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 7850 27520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 121024 (440%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
