Radeon R9 270 vs Radeon RX 6700 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 270 has a clock frequency of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1400 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It features 1280 SPUs, 80 TAUs, and 32 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6700 XT, which has a GPU core clock speed of 2321 MHz, and (Unknown) MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2000 MHz through a 192-bit bus. It also is comprised of 2560 Stream Processors, 160 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Radeon R9 270 150 Watts
Radeon RX 6700 XT 230 Watts
Difference: 80 Watts (53%)

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 6700 XT, in theory, should be much faster than the Radeon R9 270 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 393216 MB/sec
Radeon R9 270 179200 MB/sec
Difference: 214016 (119%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6700 XT is much (about 416%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R9 270. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 371360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 270 72000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 299360 (416%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6700 XT is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6700 XT 148544 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 270 28800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 119744 (416%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
