Radeon R9 270 vs Radeon RX 6900 XT

Intro

The Radeon R9 270 makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 900 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1400 MHz on this card. It features 1280 SPUs as well as 80 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6900 XT, which uses a 7 nm design. AMD has clocked the core frequency at 1825 MHz. The GDDR6 RAM runs at a speed of 2000 MHz on this specific model. It features 5120 SPUs along with 320 Texture Address Units and 128 ROPs.

Radeon R9 270 150 Watts
Radeon RX 6900 XT 300 Watts
Difference: 150 Watts (100%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6900 XT should be much faster than the Radeon R9 270 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R9 270 179200 MB/sec
Difference: 345088 (193%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT is much (more or less 711%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 270. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 584000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 270 72000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 512000 (711%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6900 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 711%) more effective at AA than the Radeon R9 270, and also will be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon RX 6900 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 270 28800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 204800 (711%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If it uses DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
