Radeon R7 240 vs Radeon RX 6800 XT

Intro

The Radeon R7 240 has a clock speed of 730 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 900 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 6800 XT, which features GPU clock speed of 1825 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 4608 Stream Processors, 288 TAUs, and 128 ROPs.

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon RX 6800 XT should be a lot faster than the Radeon R7 240 in general. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 524288 MB/sec
Radeon R7 240 28800 MB/sec
Difference: 495488 (1720%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is quite a bit (more or less 3500%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 240. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 525600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 240 14600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 511000 (3500%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 XT is much (approximately 3900%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R7 240, and able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 XT 233600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 240 5840 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 227760 (3900%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
