Geforce GTX 770 vs Radeon RX 6800

Intro

The Geforce GTX 770 has core speeds of 1046 MHz on the GPU, and 1753 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 1536 SPUs along with 128 TAUs and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon RX 6800, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1700 MHz, and 16384 MB of GDDR6 memory running at 2000 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 3840 Stream Processors, 240 Texture Address Units, and 96 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Geforce GTX 770 230 Watts
Radeon RX 6800 250 Watts
Difference: 20 Watts (9%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon RX 6800 should be quite a bit faster than the Geforce GTX 770 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 524288 MB/sec
Geforce GTX 770 224384 MB/sec
Difference: 299904 (134%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 6800 is a lot (about 205%) better at AF than the Geforce GTX 770. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 408000 Mtexels/sec
Geforce GTX 770 133888 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 274112 (205%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon RX 6800 is superior to the Geforce GTX 770, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon RX 6800 163200 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 770 33472 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 129728 (388%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
