GeForce GTX 965M vs GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER

Intro

The GeForce GTX 965M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core frequency at 944 MHz. The GDDR5 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this specific card. It features 1024 SPUs along with 64 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER, which comes with a core clock frequency of 1650 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1937 MHz. It also features a 256-bit bus, and makes use of a 12 nm design. It is comprised of 3072 SPUs, 192 TAUs, and 64 ROPs.

GeForce GTX 965M 60 Watts
GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 250 Watts
Difference: 190 Watts (317%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER should be quite a bit faster than the GeForce GTX 965M overall. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 507904 MB/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 64000 MB/sec
Difference: 443904 (694%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER should be quite a bit (more or less 424%) more effective at texture filtering than the GeForce GTX 965M. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 316800 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 60416 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 256384 (424%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER will be quite a bit (more or less 250%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce GTX 965M, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 105600 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GTX 965M 30208 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 75392 (250%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
