Geforce GTX 780 vs Radeon RX 5500 XT

Intro

The Geforce GTX 780 has core speeds of 863 MHz on the GPU, and 1502 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2304 SPUs along with 192 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5500 XT, which has a core clock frequency of 1717 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1750 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 7 nm design. It features 1408 SPUs, 88 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Radeon RX 5500 XT 130 Watts
Geforce GTX 780 250 Watts
Difference: 120 Watts (92%)

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Geforce GTX 780 should in theory be quite a bit better than the Radeon RX 5500 XT overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
Radeon RX 5500 XT 229376 MB/sec
Difference: 59008 (26%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 780 will be a bit (approximately 10%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon RX 5500 XT. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
Radeon RX 5500 XT 151096 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14600 (10%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5500 XT should be a lot (about 33%) more effective at FSAA than the Geforce GTX 780, and also should be capable of handling higher screen resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon RX 5500 XT 54944 Mpixels/sec
Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 13520 (33%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
