Radeon R7 M265 vs Radeon RX 5600

Intro

The Radeon R7 M265 comes with a clock frequency of 725 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit memory bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon RX 5600, which features a clock frequency of 1375 MHz and a GDDR6 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also makes use of a 192-bit memory bus, and uses a 7 nm design. It features 2048 SPUs, 128 Texture Address Units, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon RX 5600, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R7 M265 overall. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 294912 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 262912 (822%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 is much (approximately 911%) more effective at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M265. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 176000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 158600 (911%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon RX 5600 will be quite a bit (about 1417%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the Radeon R7 M265, and able to handle higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

Radeon RX 5600 88000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 82200 (1417%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
