GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon HD 4550 512MB

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) features a core clock frequency of 540 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 400 MHz. It also uses a 128-bit bus, and uses a 80 nm design. It features 32 SPUs, 16 Texture Address Units, and 8 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon HD 4550 512MB, which comes with GPU clock speed of 600 MHz, and 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM running at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

Radeon HD 4550 512MB 25 Watts
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 47 Watts
Difference: 22 Watts (88%)

Memory Bandwidth

Both cards have exactly the same bandwidth, so in theory they should have the same performance. (explain)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) will be a lot (approximately 80%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon HD 4550 512MB. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 4800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 3840 (80%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) is much (approximately 80%) better at anti-aliasing than the Radeon HD 4550 512MB, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 4550 512MB 2400 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1920 (80%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface within a second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
