Radeon R9 Fury X vs Radeon R9 M395X

Intro

The Radeon R9 Fury X has a GPU clock speed of 1050 MHz, and the 4096 MB of HBM memory runs at 500 MHz through a 4096-bit bus. It also features 4096 SPUs, 256 TAUs, and 64 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M395X, which comes with core speeds of 723 MHz on the GPU, and 1250 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory. It features 2048 SPUs as well as 128 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

In theory, the Radeon R9 Fury X is 220% faster than the Radeon R9 M395X in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 512000 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
Difference: 352000 (220%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 Fury X should be much (approximately 190%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M395X. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 268800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 176256 (190%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 Fury X should be a lot (approximately 190%) better at AA than the Radeon R9 M395X, and also capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 Fury X 67200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 44064 (190%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It's calculated by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
