GeForce 810M vs Radeon R9 M395X

Intro

The GeForce 810M features a GPU core clock speed of 738 MHz, and the 1024 MB of DDR3 RAM is set to run at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 48 Stream Processors, 8 Texture Address Units, and 4 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M395X, which has GPU clock speed of 723 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory set to run at 1250 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 2048 Stream Processors, 128 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 810M 15 Watts
Radeon R9 M395X 125 Watts
Difference: 110 Watts (733%)

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M395X should be 1011% faster than the GeForce 810M in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 160000 MB/sec
GeForce 810M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 145600 (1011%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M395X will be much (about 1467%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 810M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 92544 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 810M 5904 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 86640 (1467%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M395X is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M395X 23136 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 810M 2952 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20184 (684%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
