GeForce GT 440 1.5GB vs Radeon R9 M380

Intro

The GeForce GT 440 1.5GB comes with a core clock frequency of 594 MHz and a GDDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also uses a 192-bit bus, and makes use of a 40 nm design. It features 144 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 24 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M380, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 memory running at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon R9 M380 should theoretically be much faster than the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 96000 MB/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 43200 MB/sec
Difference: 52800 (122%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is much (about 181%) better at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 25744 (181%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R9 M380 is just a bit (approximately 12%) faster with regards to AA than the GeForce GT 440 1.5GB, and also should be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon R9 M380 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce GT 440 1.5GB 14256 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 1744 (12%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
