Radeon HD 5450 vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The Radeon HD 5450 features a GPU core clock speed of 650 MHz, and the 512 MB of DDR3 memory is set to run at 800 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 80(16x5) SPUs, 8 TAUs, and 4 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M365X, which has core speeds of 925 MHz on the GPU, and 1125 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640 SPUs as well as 40 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

As far as performance goes, the Radeon R9 M365X should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon HD 5450 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon HD 5450 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 59200 (463%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X is much (more or less 612%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon HD 5450. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 5200 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 31800 (612%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon HD 5450 2600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 12200 (469%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
