GeForce 930M vs Radeon R9 M365X

Intro

The GeForce 930M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 928 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a speed of 900 MHz on this specific model. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 M365X, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 925 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM is set to run at a speed of 1125 MHz on this model. It features 640 SPUs along with 40 TAUs and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M365X is 400% faster than the GeForce 930M in general, because of its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 930M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M365X will be quite a bit (more or less 66%) better at AF than the GeForce 930M. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 37000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 930M 22272 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 14728 (66%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M365X is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon R9 M365X 14800 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 930M 7424 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7376 (99%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the maximum fill rate.
