GeForce GTX 580 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 features a GPU core clock speed of 772 MHz, and the 1536 MB of GDDR5 memory runs at 1002 MHz through a 384-bit bus. It also is made up of 512 Stream Processors, 64 Texture Address Units, and 48 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 M360, which has core speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 TAUs and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 580 should in theory perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 192384 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 176384 (1102%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 should be quite a bit (approximately 83%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 49408 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 22408 (83%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 580 is the winner, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 37056 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 28056 (312%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in MB per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the max fill rate.
