Geforce GTX 780 vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Geforce GTX 780 uses a 28 nm design. nVidia has set the core frequency at 863 MHz. The GDDR5 memory runs at a frequency of 1502 MHz on this card. It features 2304 SPUs as well as 192 Texture Address Units and 48 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 M360, which has core speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Geforce GTX 780 should be a lot faster than the Radeon R7 M360 overall. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 288384 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 272384 (1702%)

Texel Rate

The Geforce GTX 780 is much (about 514%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 165696 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 138696 (514%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Geforce GTX 780 is a better choice, by a large margin. (explain)

Geforce GTX 780 41424 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 32424 (360%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be moved across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics card could possibly write to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
