Radeon HD 7870 XT vs Radeon R7 M360

Intro

The Radeon HD 7870 XT comes with a GPU clock speed of 925 MHz, and the 2048 MB of GDDR5 memory is set to run at 1500 MHz through a 256-bit bus. It also features 1536 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 32 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 M360, which features GPU clock speed of 1125 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory set to run at 1000 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is made up of 384 Stream Processors, 24 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon HD 7870 XT should be 1100% quicker than the Radeon R7 M360 in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 192000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 176000 (1100%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7870 XT should be quite a bit (more or less 229%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 88800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 61800 (229%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7870 XT will be much (about 229%) better at FSAA than the Radeon R7 M360, and capable of handling higher screen resolutions without slowing down too much. (explain)

Radeon HD 7870 XT 29600 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 20600 (229%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
