Radeon R7 M360 vs Radeon R9 390X 8G

Intro

The Radeon R7 M360 comes with core clock speeds of 1125 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 RAM. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R9 390X 8G, which features a core clock frequency of 1050 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1500 MHz. It also makes use of a 512-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 2816 SPUs, 176 Texture Address Units, and 64 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically, the Radeon R9 390X 8G should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R7 M360 in general. (explain)

Radeon R9 390X 8G 384000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M360 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 368000 (2300%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 390X 8G should be quite a bit (approximately 584%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R7 M360. (explain)

Radeon R9 390X 8G 184800 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 27000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 157800 (584%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 390X 8G is superior to the Radeon R7 M360, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 390X 8G 67200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M360 9000 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 58200 (647%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported past the external memory interface in a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
