GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) comes with a GPU core speed of 540 MHz, and the 256 MB of DDR2 memory is set to run at 400 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 32 SPUs, 16 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M330, which comes with a core clock frequency of 1030 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R5 M330 should be 13% faster than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 12800 MB/sec
Difference: 1600 (13%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R5 M330 should be quite a bit (approximately 138%) better at texture filtering than the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 8640 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 11960 (138%)

Pixel Rate

If using high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R5 M330 is superior to the GeForce 8600 GS (OEM), and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8600 GS (OEM) 4320 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 3920 (91%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in MB per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
