GeForce GTX 580 3GB vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The GeForce GTX 580 3GB has clock speeds of 772 MHz on the GPU, and 1002 MHz on the 3072 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 512 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 48 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R5 M330, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 1030 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this card. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the GeForce GTX 580 3GB should be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M330 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 3GB 192384 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 177984 (1236%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 3GB is quite a bit (approximately 140%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 3GB 49408 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 28808 (140%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 580 3GB is a lot (more or less 350%) better at AA than the Radeon R5 M330, and will be able to handle higher screen resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 580 3GB 37056 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 28816 (350%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (in units of MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
