Radeon HD 7790 vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The Radeon HD 7790 comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1000 MHz, and the 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM is set to run at 1500 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 896 Stream Processors, 56 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M330, which has a GPU core clock speed of 1030 MHz, and 2048 MB of DDR3 memory running at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 Texture Address Units, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The Radeon HD 7790, in theory, should perform a lot faster than the Radeon R5 M330 in general. (explain)

Radeon HD 7790 96000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 81600 (567%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7790 will be a lot (more or less 172%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

Radeon HD 7790 56000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 35400 (172%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon HD 7790 will be quite a bit (more or less 94%) better at AA than the Radeon R5 M330, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions better. (explain)

Radeon HD 7790 16000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7760 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (in units of megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
