GeForce GTX 960 vs Radeon R5 M330

Intro

The GeForce GTX 960 features core clock speeds of 1127 MHz on the GPU, and 1750 MHz on the 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 TAUs and 32 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R5 M330, which has a core clock frequency of 1030 MHz and a DDR3 memory frequency of 900 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 960 should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the Radeon R5 M330 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960 112000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 97600 (678%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 960 should be quite a bit (about 250%) more effective at AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960 72128 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 51528 (250%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 960 should be a lot (about 338%) faster with regards to AA than the Radeon R5 M330, and will be capable of handling higher screen resolutions more effectively. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960 36064 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 27824 (338%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR memory, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be applied per second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the graphics card can possibly record to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
