Radeon R5 M330 vs Radeon R9 M280X

Intro

The Radeon R5 M330 makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core frequency at 1030 MHz. The DDR3 RAM is set to run at a speed of 900 MHz on this specific card. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R9 M280X, which features GPU core speed of 900 MHz, and 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1375 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 896 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M280X should be 511% faster than the Radeon R5 M330 overall, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M280X 88000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M330 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 73600 (511%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M280X should be quite a bit (more or less 145%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R5 M330. (explain)

Radeon R9 M280X 50400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 20600 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 29800 (145%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M280X is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R9 M280X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M330 8240 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6160 (75%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the interface width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels that the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
