GeForce 940M vs GeForce GTX 860M

Intro

The GeForce 940M makes use of a 28 nm design. nVidia has clocked the core speed at 1072 MHz. The DDR3 memory is set to run at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the GeForce GTX 860M, which has a core clock speed of 797 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1000 MHz. It also features a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 1152 SPUs, 96 Texture Address Units, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce GTX 860M is 300% quicker than the GeForce 940M in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 64000 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 48000 (300%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be quite a bit (more or less 197%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 940M. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 76512 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 50784 (197%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce GTX 860M will be a lot (about 49%) more effective at FSAA than the GeForce 940M, and should be able to handle higher resolutions better. (explain)

GeForce GTX 860M 12752 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4176 (49%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface within a second. It's calculated by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that can be applied in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the video card could possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the maximum fill rate.
