Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 143 Watts
Difference: 118 Watts (472%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB will be 340% faster than the GeForce 830M in general, because of its higher bandwidth. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 63360 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 48960 (340%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB will be a lot (approximately 50%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 24624 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 8160 (50%)

Pixel Rate

The GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB is quite a bit (approximately 25%) more effective at anti-aliasing than the GeForce 830M, and also able to handle higher screen resolutions without losing too much performance. (explain)

GeForce 8800 GTS (G80) 640MB 10260 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 2028 (25%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (in units of MB per second) that can be transferred past the external memory interface in one second. The number is calculated by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the video card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is calculated by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
