GeForce 830M vs Radeon R7 250X

Intro

The GeForce 830M comes with a GPU core clock speed of 1029 MHz, and the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory runs at 900 MHz through a 64-bit bus. It also features 256 Stream Processors, 16 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Compare all that to the Radeon R7 250X, which features GPU clock speed of 1000 MHz, and 1024 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also features 640 Stream Processors, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 830M 25 Watts
Radeon R7 250X 95 Watts
Difference: 70 Watts (280%)

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 250X will be 400% faster than the GeForce 830M overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 830M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 57600 (400%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X will be much (approximately 143%) more effective at AF than the GeForce 830M. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 40000 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 830M 16464 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 23536 (143%)

Pixel Rate

The Radeon R7 250X will be quite a bit (approximately 94%) faster with regards to anti-aliasing than the GeForce 830M, and also will be capable of handling higher resolutions while still performing well. (explain)

Radeon R7 250X 16000 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 830M 8232 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 7768 (94%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory in one second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
