GeForce 810M vs GeForce GTX 960

Intro

The GeForce 810M has core clock speeds of 738 MHz on the GPU, and 900 MHz on the 1024 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 48 SPUs as well as 8 TAUs and 4 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the GeForce GTX 960, which comes with GPU clock speed of 1127 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM running at 1750 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is made up of 1024 SPUs, 64 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Power Consumption (Max TDP)

GeForce 810M 15 Watts
GeForce GTX 960 120 Watts
Difference: 105 Watts (700%)

Memory Bandwidth

The GeForce GTX 960 should theoretically be quite a bit faster than the GeForce 810M overall. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960 112000 MB/sec
GeForce 810M 14400 MB/sec
Difference: 97600 (678%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 960 will be quite a bit (approximately 1122%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the GeForce 810M. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960 72128 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 810M 5904 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 66224 (1122%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high resolution is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 960 is superior to the GeForce 810M, and very much so. (explain)

GeForce GTX 960 36064 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 810M 2952 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 33112 (1122%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface in one second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. In the case of DDR RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed in one second. This is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip could possibly record to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the number of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to get to the max fill rate.
