Radeon R7 M260 vs Radeon R9 M275X

Intro

The Radeon R7 M260 comes with core speeds of 715 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare that to the Radeon R9 M275X, which has a core clock frequency of 900 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 640 SPUs, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R9 M275X should perform quite a bit faster than the Radeon R7 M260 overall. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R9 M275X will be quite a bit (more or less 110%) faster with regards to AF than the Radeon R7 M260. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 36000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 18840 (110%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M275X is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R9 M275X 14400 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 8680 (152%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in a second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by its memory clock speed. If it uses DDR type RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are processed per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total amount of texture units by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum number of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of Render Output Units by the the card's clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel fill rate also depends on lots of other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
