Radeon R7 370 4G vs Radeon R9 M270X

Intro

The Radeon R7 370 4G comes with core speeds of 975 MHz on the GPU, and 1400 MHz on the 4096 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 1024 SPUs as well as 64 Texture Address Units and 32 ROPs.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R9 M270X, which has a core clock frequency of 725 MHz and a GDDR5 memory frequency of 1125 MHz. It also features a 128-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 640 SPUs, 40 TAUs, and 16 Raster Operation Units.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

In theory, the Radeon R7 370 4G will be 149% quicker than the Radeon R9 M270X in general, due to its greater data rate. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 179200 MB/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 72000 MB/sec
Difference: 107200 (149%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 370 4G is much (about 115%) better at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R9 M270X. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 62400 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 29000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 33400 (115%)

Pixel Rate

If using a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon R7 370 4G is a better choice, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon R7 370 4G 31200 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R9 M270X 11600 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 19600 (169%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Memory bandwidth is the maximum amount of information (counted in MB per second) that can be transferred over the external memory interface in a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. If it uses DDR type memory, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the card's memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is calculated by multiplying the total number of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher this number, the better the video card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels processed per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the graphics card could possibly record to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
