GeForce 940M vs Radeon R9 M265X

Intro

The GeForce 940M has core speeds of 1072 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs along with 24 TAUs and 8 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R9 M265X, which has a GPU core clock speed of 575 MHz, and 2048 MB of GDDR5 RAM set to run at 1125 MHz through a 128-bit bus. It also is comprised of 640 Stream Processors, 40 Texture Address Units, and 16 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R9 M265X will be 350% faster than the GeForce 940M in general, due to its greater bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 72000 MB/sec
GeForce 940M 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce 940M should be a small bit (approximately 12%) better at texture filtering than the Radeon R9 M265X. (explain)

GeForce 940M 25728 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R9 M265X 23000 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 2728 (12%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R9 M265X is the winner, but only just. (explain)

Radeon R9 M265X 9200 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 940M 8576 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 624 (7%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported over the external memory interface within a second. It's worked out by multiplying the card's bus width by the speed of its memory. In the case of DDR memory, the result should be multiplied by 2 once again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the bandwidth is, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and higher screen resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum number of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels the video card can possibly write to the local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is worked out by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the the core speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the max fill rate.
