Radeon HD 4770 vs Radeon R7 M265

Intro

The Radeon HD 4770 comes with clock speeds of 750 MHz on the GPU, and 800 MHz on the 512 MB of GDDR5 RAM. It features 640(128x5) SPUs along with 32 TAUs and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specifications to the Radeon R7 M265, which has a clock speed of 725 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 128-bit memory bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is made up of 384 SPUs, 24 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 4770 should be 60% quicker than the Radeon R7 M265 overall, due to its higher data rate. (explain)

Radeon HD 4770 51200 MB/sec
Radeon R7 M265 32000 MB/sec
Difference: 19200 (60%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 4770 is quite a bit (more or less 38%) more effective at anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R7 M265. (explain)

Radeon HD 4770 24000 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 17400 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6600 (38%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high screen resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 4770 is the winner, by a large margin. (explain)

Radeon HD 4770 12000 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R7 M265 5800 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 6200 (107%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the maximum amount of data (counted in megabytes per second) that can be moved past the external memory interface in one second. It is worked out by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory clock speed. If the card has DDR RAM, it must be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The better the bandwidth is, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that can be processed in one second. This number is worked out by multiplying the total texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better the texel rate, the better the graphics card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in a second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The figure is worked out by multiplying the number of colour ROPs by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - aka Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel rate is also dependant on lots of other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to get to the maximum fill rate.
