GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) vs Radeon R7 M260

Intro

The GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) has a clock speed of 450 MHz and a DDR2 memory frequency of 400 MHz. It also uses a 64-bit bus, and makes use of a 80 nm design. It is comprised of 8 SPUs, 4 Texture Address Units, and 2 ROPs.

Compare that to the Radeon R7 M260, which comes with core clock speeds of 715 MHz on the GPU, and 1000 MHz on the 2048 MB of DDR3 memory. It features 384 SPUs as well as 24 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon R7 M260 should be 150% faster than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) overall, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 16000 MB/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 6400 MB/sec
Difference: 9600 (150%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon R7 M260 should be quite a bit (about 853%) faster with regards to AF than the GeForce 8300 GS (OEM). (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 17160 Mtexels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 1800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 15360 (853%)

Pixel Rate

If running with high levels of AA is important to you, then the Radeon R7 M260 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

Radeon R7 M260 5720 Mpixels/sec
GeForce 8300 GS (OEM) 900 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 4820 (536%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of data (counted in MB per second) that can be moved over the external memory interface in one second. It is calculated by multiplying the card's interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The better the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, High Dynamic Range and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum amount of texture map elements (texels) that are applied per second. This figure is worked out by multiplying the total number of texture units by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied per second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to the local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is calculated by multiplying the amount of ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for drawing the pixels (image) on the screen. The actual pixel rate also depends on many other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the potential to reach the maximum fill rate.
