GeForce GTX 560 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The GeForce GTX 560 comes with a clock speed of 810 MHz and a GDDR5 memory speed of 1001 MHz. It also uses a 256-bit memory bus, and uses a 40 nm design. It is made up of 336 SPUs, 56 TAUs, and 32 ROPs.

Compare all of that to the Radeon R5 M255, which comes with a clock frequency of 940 MHz and a DDR3 memory speed of 1000 MHz. It also makes use of a 64-bit bus, and uses a 28 nm design. It is comprised of 320 SPUs, 20 TAUs, and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Performance-wise, the GeForce GTX 560 should theoretically be much superior to the Radeon R5 M255 in general. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 128128 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 112128 (701%)

Texel Rate

The GeForce GTX 560 will be a lot (approximately 141%) faster with regards to anisotropic filtering than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 45360 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 26560 (141%)

Pixel Rate

If using lots of anti-aliasing is important to you, then the GeForce GTX 560 is a better choice, by far. (explain)

GeForce GTX 560 25920 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 18400 (245%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the largest amount of information (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transferred across the external memory interface within a second. The number is worked out by multiplying the interface width by its memory speed. In the case of DDR type RAM, the result should be multiplied by 2 again. If DDR5, multiply by ANOTHER 2x. The higher the memory bandwidth, the faster the card will be in general. It especially helps with anti-aliasing, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core clock speed of the chip. The higher the texel rate, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels applied in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the most pixels the graphics card can possibly write to its local memory per second - measured in millions of pixels per second. The number is worked out by multiplying the amount of colour ROPs by the the core clock speed. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - also sometimes called Render Output Units) are responsible for filling the screen with pixels (the image). The actual pixel fill rate also depends on quite a few other factors, most notably the memory bandwidth of the card - the lower the bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
