Radeon HD 7750 vs Radeon R5 M255

Intro

The Radeon HD 7750 makes use of a 28 nm design. AMD has clocked the core speed at 800 MHz. The GDDR5 RAM runs at a speed of 1125 MHz on this specific model. It features 512 SPUs as well as 32 Texture Address Units and 16 Rasterization Operator Units.

Compare those specs to the Radeon R5 M255, which uses a 28 nm design. AMD has set the core speed at 940 MHz. The DDR3 RAM works at a frequency of 1000 MHz on this particular model. It features 320 SPUs along with 20 Texture Address Units and 8 ROPs.

Power Usage and Theoretical Benchmarks

Memory Bandwidth

Theoretically speaking, the Radeon HD 7750 will be 350% quicker than the Radeon R5 M255 in general, due to its higher bandwidth. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 72000 MB/sec
Radeon R5 M255 16000 MB/sec
Difference: 56000 (350%)

Texel Rate

The Radeon HD 7750 is a lot (about 36%) better at AF than the Radeon R5 M255. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 25600 Mtexels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 18800 Mtexels/sec
Difference: 6800 (36%)

Pixel Rate

If running with a high resolution is important to you, then the Radeon HD 7750 is superior to the Radeon R5 M255, and very much so. (explain)

Radeon HD 7750 12800 Mpixels/sec
Radeon R5 M255 7520 Mpixels/sec
Difference: 5280 (70%)

Please note that the above 'benchmarks' are all just theoretical - the results were calculated based on the card's specifications, and real-world performance may (and probably will) vary at least a bit.

Memory Bandwidth: Bandwidth is the max amount of data (measured in megabytes per second) that can be transported across the external memory interface in a second. It's calculated by multiplying the bus width by the speed of its memory. If the card has DDR RAM, it should be multiplied by 2 once again. If it uses DDR5, multiply by 4 instead. The higher the memory bandwidth, the better the card will be in general. It especially helps with AA, HDR and high resolutions.

Texel Rate: Texel rate is the maximum texture map elements (texels) that are applied in one second. This figure is calculated by multiplying the total amount of texture units of the card by the core speed of the chip. The better this number, the better the card will be at handling texture filtering (anisotropic filtering - AF). It is measured in millions of texels in one second.

Pixel Rate: Pixel rate is the maximum amount of pixels that the graphics chip can possibly write to its local memory in a second - measured in millions of pixels per second. Pixel rate is calculated by multiplying the amount of Raster Operations Pipelines by the clock speed of the card. ROPs (Raster Operations Pipelines - sometimes also referred to as Render Output Units) are responsible for outputting the pixels (image) to the screen. The actual pixel output rate also depends on quite a few other factors, especially the memory bandwidth - the lower the memory bandwidth is, the lower the ability to reach the max fill rate.
